Taiwanese prosecutors say a suspect surnamed Chang, whose employment link to Nvidia remains unconfirmed, has been detained as part of an investigation into the alleged illegal export of Super Micro AI servers to China. The case is focused on whether restricted computing hardware was routed around US export controls.
The Keelung District Prosecutors’ Office said Chang was questioned on July 24 after searches of his home and workplace. It sought custody over concerns that he might flee, destroy evidence, or influence witnesses. Prosecutors are examining suspected forgery and breach of trust, and Nvidia’s Taipei office was also searched in connection with the inquiry.
The servers allegedly contained Nvidia chips covered by US export restrictions. Nvidia said it primarily sells to established partners responsible for complying with those rules. The company did not confirm whether Chang is an employee.
Authorities have described this action as the third round of raids in the investigation, following operations in May and June. Claims that three other individuals and two Super Micro employees were detained in those earlier actions have not been independently verified.
The expanding inquiry puts a spotlight on how advanced AI servers may reach China despite export controls, while leaving key questions about Chang’s role and the shipment chain unresolved. The allegations remain under investigation.
