Paramount is expected to release Edgar Wright’s The Running Man on video-on-demand and digital platforms on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, according to When to Stream, which cited unnamed sources. The publication said Paramount had neither announced nor confirmed the date at the time of its report and cautioned that release dates could change.
The reported date would bring the film to digital platforms just over a month after its Nov. 14 opening in U.S. theaters. When to Stream’s report did not specify rental pricing or a subscription-streaming premiere date.
A new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel
Wright directed the film and co-wrote its screenplay with Michael Bacall. Glen Powell stars as Ben Richards, alongside Josh Brolin as television producer Dan Killian.
According to the film’s synopsis, Richards enters a deadly televised competition to help his sick daughter. Contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with each day bringing a larger cash reward. Richards becomes a fan favorite and a threat to the people running the show.
King published The Running Man in 1982 under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Wright’s film is the novel’s second film adaptation, following the 1987 release starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Richards and Richard Dawson as game-show host Damon Killian.
Powell told TheWrap that King’s approval was required for his casting and that the author ultimately approved him. Wright said King was sent Hit Man because he had not seen Powell in a lead role.
