Supermicro shares slip as options traders seek downside protection, GuruFocus reports

SMCI fell Monday after mixed quarterly signals: slower revenue growth, lower margins, defensive options activity, and intensifying server competition.

Super Micro Computer (SMCI), a supplier of servers and storage systems for data centers, traded $0.64 lower at approximately $31.70 in a market snapshot reported by GuruFocus. The publication also reported increased interest in options providing protection against further share-price declines.

About 77,000 options contracts changed hands, with calls outnumbering puts. The put/call ratio was 0.49, slightly above the usual level of 0.45 cited by GuruFocus. The publication characterized overall options activity as relatively low.

GuruFocus interpreted a steeper put-call skew as a sign of growing interest in downside protection. That assessment accompanied call-heavy trading, limiting any broader characterization of the options activity as bearish.

In its financial assessment, GuruFocus listed Supermicro’s gross margin at 10.08%, describing it as near the lower end of its historical range. The report did not identify the reporting period for that figure or establish the quarterly revenue miss described in the original article.
