Paramount’s Planned Avatar RPG Has Reportedly Been Put on Hold

Paramount’s planned Avatar RPG has reportedly been suspended indefinitely, leaving one of the franchise’s most ambitious video game projects without a clear path forward.

The project was first announced in 2024 as a large-scale action-RPG set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Rather than retelling Aang or Korra’s stories, the game was described as a new adventure centered on a previously unseen Avatar, with players expected to master the four elements in a setting far removed from the familiar eras of the animated shows.

That premise made the game stand out in a franchise whose video game history has often been smaller in scope than its television and publishing presence. For fans who have long wanted a major Avatar console and PC RPG, the announcement suggested a chance to explore the world’s bending systems, nations, and Avatar cycle through a more expansive interactive format.

The Reported Cancellation Follows Changes At Paramount Games

According to the report, the Avatar RPG was not in active production when Paramount Games Studio was set up after the Paramount Skydance merger. Studio leadership reportedly decided not to continue with the project as the reorganized games division focused on other priorities.

That distinction matters. The game had been announced, but the report indicates it had not reached the kind of production stage where a full development pipeline was already underway inside the new structure. In practical terms, that means the project appears to have been stopped before it became a fully active release on Paramount’s games slate.

The decision also arrives as Paramount Games Studio is being positioned as a more formal business unit. In comments cited by the report, Shawn Kittelsen, senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, described games as having moved from a consumer products sub-department into a dedicated unit with more responsibility for revenue and development. He also pointed to Skydance’s existing game studios as part of the company’s broader support system.

The Avatar RPG is not the only franchise project that had drawn attention from fans, but it was one of the clearest attempts to build a large modern game around the series’ world. Its reported suspension narrows the near-term outlook for Avatar games, especially for players hoping for an RPG that could treat bending, exploration, and character progression as central systems rather than side features.

Why The RPG Mattered To Avatar Fans

Avatar has continued to expand across television, streaming, animation, books, and games, but its strongest interactive adaptations have not yet matched the scale many fans associate with the franchise’s worldbuilding. The idea of a new Avatar, set in a different era and built for PC and consoles, gave the announced RPG a broader promise than another direct adaptation of the original animated series.

The reported pause also shows how corporate restructuring can affect licensed games before players ever see a trailer, gameplay footage, or a release window. A project can be announced with major ambitions and still become vulnerable if ownership, budgets, or strategic priorities shift before full production begins.

For now, the safest reading is that the announced Avatar RPG is not moving ahead in its previously expected form. Paramount may continue to pursue other games based on its franchises, and Avatar remains an active entertainment property, but this particular RPG no longer appears to be on the same track fans were led to expect after its 2024 announcement.
