Sony retail partner Kunkoku says Sony ended shipments of its UBP-X700/K 4K Blu-ray player in Japan on 22 October 2026, with sales due to finish once remaining stock is sold. The reported halt concerns the Japanese market; a worldwide production stop has not been independently confirmed.

Kunkoku identifies the UBP-X700/K as Sony’s last dedicated Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan. It dates the model’s release to 17 May 2025, placing the reported end of shipments about 17 months after launch.

The retailer also says “no information regarding a successor model has been announced at this time”. A replacement for the player remains unconfirmed.

Kunkoku says Sony’s standard Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1700/K, remains on sale in Japan. That limits the scope of the reported withdrawal to the dedicated Ultra HD model: the retailer is not describing an end to every standalone Sony device that can play ordinary Blu-ray discs.

Japanese shipments and overseas sales

Kunkoku says the Japanese Sony store subsequently marked the player as unavailable for further restocking. The shipment report does not set out when sales might end in the UK or other overseas markets.

Sony’s UK website lists the UBP-X700/K as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support. That listing does not establish stock levels or whether further supplies will reach the UK.

The reported change follows a separate decision affecting Sony’s Japanese Blu-ray recorder range. In a notice dated 9 February 2026, Sony said it would progressively end shipments of all Blu-ray disc recorder models from that month and would offer no successors. That notice concerned recorders, a separate product category from the UBP-X700/K player.

PS5 remains a disc-playback option

Sony’s PlayStation support documentation confirms that PS5 consoles equipped with a disc drive can play Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs. Kunkoku says the console would be Sony’s remaining product shipping in Japan with that capability after the standalone player’s exit.

Disc playback depends on the console’s configuration. Sony says the original CFI-1000-series PS5 Digital Edition does not support discs, while compatible later models can use a separately sold drive. The UBP-X700/K shipment report provides no confirmation of disc-drive support in future PlayStation consoles.
