This year’s TV announcements have been dominated by two themes: next-gen RGB backlights for LCDs and brighter, more efficient OLED panels. But TCL also quietly pushed a third path into the spotlight—something it’s calling SQD Mini LED, debuting on its 2026 flagship set, the TCL X11L.
The pitch is simple: deliver some of the richer color benefits people expect from RGB-backlit LCDs, while still leaning on the major gains TCL (and the industry) has made with traditional mini-LED over the last few years—especially when it comes to contrast control and zone density.

Mini-LED, SQD Mini LED, and RGB Mini LED: what’s different?
All three are LCD TV technologies. That means there’s still an LCD pixel layer doing the image formation, with a backlight behind it supplying the light.
Regular mini-LED
“Standard” mini-LED TVs use a single-color backlight (commonly blue or white LEDs) plus a quantum dot layer to improve color. The mini-LED part refers to the backlight using lots of very small LEDs that can be controlled in zones for better contrast and reduced blooming.
SQD Mini LED
SQD Mini LED keeps the single-color mini-LED backlight approach, but TCL says it uses a more advanced quantum dot implementation—designed to be more efficient and capable of wider color reproduction. In TCL’s messaging, SQD is essentially “mini-LED + upgraded quantum dots,” rather than a full rethink of the backlight architecture.
RGB Mini LED
RGB Mini LED changes the backlight itself: instead of a single-color backlight, the light source uses red, green, and blue emitters. In theory, that can reduce how much the TV relies on extra color conversion layers because the backlight is already producing cleaner primaries. (Implementation varies, so it’s safer to say RGB can reduce reliance on quantum dots, rather than declaring they’re never used.)
Why TCL made SQD Mini LED the X11L’s headline feature
TCL’s argument comes down to contrast control and brute-force backlight performance. The company says SQD Mini LED allows it to push its newest single-color mini-LED system to extremes—up to 20,736 dimming zones (on the 98-inch model) and up to 10,000 nits peak brightness—while still delivering the kind of rich color people associate with RGB designs.
On paper, it’s an appealing compromise: keep the mature mini-LED playbook that’s great at controlling light, then widen the color envelope with better quantum dots.
The measurements: the color story is strong, but not “100% BT.2020”
Testing the X11L tells a more nuanced story. In Filmmaker Mode, the set measured 91.8% of the BT.2020 color gamut and 97.7% of DCI-P3—excellent numbers for a mini-LED TV, especially compared with many past high-end models.
But it’s also a clear gap from TCL’s own “100% BT.2020” claim for the X11L, at least based on these results.
One important clarification: DCI-P3 coverage matters a lot in real viewing. Consumer HDR delivery often uses a Rec.2020/BT.2020 container, but much content is effectively graded to P3 (often P3-D65) inside that container, making P3 a very practical yardstick. On that front, SQD’s improvement isn’t as dramatic as the BT.2020 number makes it look.
The good news: color accuracy on the X11L is described as impeccable—exactly the kind of thing you’d hope premium quantum dot refinement would deliver.
Brightness: close to the claim in Vivid, less exciting in real modes
Brightness is another “it depends” situation. In the most eye-popping mode, the X11L reportedly hit 9,394 nits in Vivid mode (5% window), which is massive.
But in the modes people should actually use—like Filmmaker Mode—the X11L didn’t consistently translate its new tech into a clear brightness win versus some existing high-end mini-LED sets. That isn’t necessarily bad: mini-LED improvements in black handling and blooming control can come with tradeoffs that limit “always-on” brightness.
It’s also worth remembering that chasing extreme nits can create new problems around dark tones and near-black detail—something RGB mini-LED sets have struggled with in early examples, even when they post huge measurement numbers.
Is SQD Mini LED the next big thing?
Based on these early measurements alone, SQD Mini LED looks more like a refinement than a revolution. The BT.2020 gain is notable, but the more practical DCI-P3 figure doesn’t leap forward in the same way, and the real-world brightness story is mixed.
None of this is a final verdict on the X11L—picture quality lives and dies by things that don’t show up neatly in a single chart: blooming control, shadow detail, motion handling, processing, uniformity, and how the TV behaves across real content.
But if you’re watching the “next-gen TV” race for 2026, SQD Mini LED—at least from these early numbers—doesn’t yet look like it’s made RGB mini-LED any less interesting. If anything, it raises a sharper question: is TCL’s flagship SQD approach a bridge to RGB, or a sign it still thinks the best mini-LED future is a smarter version of what we already have?
