LG is bringing a new kind of “premium LCD” to CES 2026. The company says it will unveil its first-ever flagship RGB TV, the LG Micro RGB evo, which pairs an LCD panel with an RGB Micro backlight built from smaller red, green, and blue LEDs instead of the more common blue/white backlight approach.
LG’s pitch is simple: more precise light control, richer color reproduction, and an LCD picture that aims to close the gap with OLED in the areas people notice most—contrast and color.
Micro RGB evo: what LG is promising
LG says the Micro RGB evo uses more than 1,000 local dimming zones, which it positions as a “significant step forward” for its LCD lineup.
Under the hood is LG’s Dual AI Engine-based α (Alpha) 11 AI Processor Gen 3, which the company says helps enable OLED-like precision for controlling the RGB backlight while also handling processing tasks like 4K upscaling (via LG’s Dual Super Upscaling).
Why an RGB backlight matters
Traditional LED-backlit LCD TVs typically rely on a blue LED backlight with filters (or a white backlight) to produce color. LG argues that moving to an RGB backlight expands the TV’s ability to reproduce a broader range of colors.
LG also says the Micro RGB evo has been certified by Intertek for 100% color gamut coverage in BT.2020, as well as DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB—a big claim on paper, and one that should be interesting to see validated in real-world testing.
Model, sizes, and smart TV features
LG lists the TV’s model number as MRGB95. It’s expected to ship in 100-inch, 86-inch, and 75-inch sizes, with pricing and availability still to be announced.
On the software side, LG says the TV will run webOS with deeper personalization features (including Voice ID and “My Page”) and built-in AI tools such as AI Chatbot, AI Search, and an updated AI Concierge experience.
How it stacks up to the competition
Samsung has also been pushing the concept: it introduced a 115-inch Micro RGB model in 2025 and is expanding its lineup for 2026, suggesting RGB-backlit LCD is becoming a bigger trend across premium TV roadmaps.
One caution, though: zone count comparisons can be misleading. LG is talking about “1,000+” zones, while some rivals market extremely high local dimming figures—but the numbers vary by model and screen size, and brands sometimes use different definitions for what counts as a “zone.” For example, TCL’s QM8K marketing points to “up to” LD3800 Precise Dimming rather than “5,000 zones,” and the real-world impact still comes down to how well the algorithm and panel perform together.
What to watch for at CES 2026
LG hasn’t shared full specs yet—brightness targets, refresh rates, HDR formats, and detailed measurement data are still missing. Those details (and early hands-on impressions) will matter, especially because the Micro RGB evo is a “picture quality story” product.
If LG’s claims hold up, the Micro RGB evo could be one of the more meaningful LCD leaps we see at CES 2026—not because it’s chasing raw zone counts, but because it’s trying a different backlight approach to push color and contrast forward at the same time.
