Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027 to make room for increased Cybercab output, CEO Elon Musk said in a November 6, 2026, post on X.

Musk gave approximate timing for the Texas wind-down. Whether Tesla will discontinue the electric pickup altogether or manufacture it elsewhere remains unclear.

Cybercab expansion and safety reviews

The proposed production shift would allocate more factory space to Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built, two-seat robotaxi designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas.

Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in November 2019 and began customer deliveries in November 2023. The stainless-steel pickup has since been subject to safety recalls, including one involving exterior trim panels that could detach from the vehicle.

Tesla’s trim-panel recall covered 2024 and 2025 model-year Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. The company said the panel could separate at an adhesive joint, creating a road hazard for following motorists. Tesla specified replacement of the affected assembly as the remedy.

Cybercab also faces regulatory scrutiny. On September 4, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced an audit of Tesla’s certification that Cybercab complies with applicable federal vehicle safety standards. The agency said it would examine the technical data and processes behind that certification, including whether Tesla considered some requirements inapplicable to vehicles without traditional human controls. NHTSA said existing standards remained in force while it pursued rule changes covering equipment such as brake pedals.
