The Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company has unveiled what it calls the next evolution of its purpose-built robotaxi, keeping the same boxy, shuttle-like shape while focusing on the cabin, rider experience, and visual cues around the vehicle. The result is a more polished version of the familiar Zoox design: no steering wheel, no pedals, and four inward-facing seats arranged more like a compact lounge than a conventional car.

What changed in the new Zoox robotaxi

The biggest changes are aimed at passengers rather than vehicle enthusiasts. Zoox has described upgrades that include higher-quality touchscreens, more comfortable seats and headrests, and interior adjustments intended to make small items easier to spot before riders leave the vehicle.

Those are modest-sounding changes, but they point to the problem Zoox is trying to solve. A robotaxi is not only an autonomy project; it is also a service product. If riders are going to treat it like a real alternative to a ride-hailing car, the cabin has to feel simple, comfortable, and hard to misuse.

Zoox is also revising the vehicle’s bidirectional reflectors, which are meant to help people identify the front and rear of a vehicle that does not have the familiar layout of a normal car. Because the robotaxi can look similar from either end, clearer external cues could matter for passengers, pedestrians, emergency responders, and law enforcement. Zoox has said the reflectors are being enlarged and moved, though the real-world impact will depend on how visible the changes are in actual street conditions.

The verdict for riders

For riders, the redesigned Zoox robotaxi appears to be a refinement rather than a reason to seek out the service on its own. The meaningful question is not whether the seats are nicer, but whether the company can turn its unusual vehicle into a reliable, paid transportation option in more places.

Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020, and the company is trying to compete in a market where Waymo remains the most visible U.S. robotaxi operator. Zoox has pointed to rider numbers and fleet growth plans, while Waymo has already built a broader paid-service footprint. The gap is not just about technology; it is about regulatory clearance, fleet production, city-by-city operations, and consumer trust.

Zoox’s broader commercial ambitions are also tied to federal review. The company has sought permission from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to operate up to 2,500 of its self-driving vehicles on public roads for commercial use. Until that process is resolved, the path from free rides and limited pilots to a full paid robotaxi network remains conditional.

Zoox says the redesigned model is its production-intent vehicle, and it expects to bring the design into its fleet later. The company has also discussed large-scale production at its San Francisco Bay Area manufacturing hub, with an eventual target of 10,000 vehicles per year at full scale. Those are ambitious numbers, but the near-term story is simpler: Zoox is polishing the vehicle before asking more riders, cities, and regulators to treat it like transportation rather than a demo.
