Asus and Xreal announced preorder availability for the ROG Xreal R1 gaming AR glasses on May 15, 2026, following their unveiling at CES in January. Xreal announced a price of $849, while Asus said worldwide shipping would begin June 1.

The announced retail schedule put Best Buy preorders on May 15 and orders through Xreal’s online store on May 17. The reported Best Buy listing price was $849.99.

The R1 functions as a wearable external display rather than a standalone VR headset. Games run on connected hardware, while the glasses present a virtual screen with spatial tracking features.

Display specifications and the 240Hz qualification

Asus specifies Full HD (1920 × 1080) Micro-OLED displays and brightness of up to 700 nits with its increased-brightness setting enabled. The reported panel specifications identify 0.55-inch Sony units.

The maximum refresh rate comes with a qualification: Asus specifies 240Hz with Frame Rate Boost enabled. Its product page says this mode achieves FHD 240Hz through image scaling and may slightly reduce visual sharpness compared with native-resolution mode.

Asus also lists a 0.01ms panel response time and, separately, 3ms motion-to-photon latency. These figures describe different aspects of display performance and remain manufacturer claims.

The company describes the virtual image as equivalent to a screen measuring up to 171 inches viewed from four meters away, with a 57-degree field of view. Asus claims that field of view covers up to 95% of the user’s focused viewing area.

Device connections and the included dock

Direct connections require a compatible device that supports DisplayPort video output over USB-C. A USB-C connector alone does not establish compatibility. Asus says the ROG Ally handheld connects through a single USB-C cable.

The package includes the ROG Control Dock. Asus specifies two HDMI 2.0 inputs and one DisplayPort 1.4 input for connections to PCs and consoles. Reported compatible consoles include Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Spatial tracking, lens dimming and audio

Asus says the built-in Xreal X1 spatial processor provides native three degrees of freedom, or 3DoF, tracking. Anchor mode lets the wearer fix the virtual screen in place, while Follow mode allows it to move with their view.

The glasses also have electrochromic lenses with three manual tint levels. Asus says automatic transparency in Anchor mode makes the lenses more transparent when the wearer looks away from the screen and darkens them again when they look back. Onboard speakers use Sound by Bose technology.
