Disney’s animal-packed sequel Zootopia 2 has officially taken the lead as 2025’s top-grossing Hollywood release.
After about 20 days in theaters, the film has reached roughly $1.14 billion worldwide, edging past Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake at around $1.04 billion.
It’s still not the biggest release of the year overall, though. That crown remains with China’s animated juggernaut Ne Zha 2, which sits at roughly $2.15 billion worldwide.
A fast sprint to $1 billion
Zootopia 2 crossed $1 billion globally in 17 days, making it the fastest PG-rated film to hit that mark.
The sequel is also already climbing the all-time animation charts, outpacing the original 2016 Zootopia ($1.025 billion) and last year’s Moana 2 ($1.06 billion).
Overseas box office is doing the heavy lifting
Internationally, Zootopia 2 continues to roar. In its third weekend, the movie added about $131.1 million from 53 territories, pushing its overseas total to roughly $878 million (trackers now list it around $878.9 million international).
That matters because Inside Out 2 is currently the only animated film to cross $1 billion internationally—and Zootopia 2 is now within striking distance.
China is the standout market
China has been the film’s biggest single-market story: Zootopia 2 has earned about $502.4 million there so far, trailing only Avengers: Endgame ($632 million) as the biggest MPA (Hollywood) release in the country.
Disney’s other weekend: a hard miss
Not everything went right for Disney at the box office. James L. Brooks’ political dramedy Ella McCay posted a weak debut, with about $2.1 million domestic and around $283,000 international (roughly $2.30 million worldwide) against a $35 million budget.
Can Avatar: Fire and Ash still move the needle?
Disney’s year isn’t over. James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opens on Dec. 19, and given the franchise’s track record, it could become a major late-year factor—though a large chunk of its box office will likely land in the following calendar year.
