Netflix released Black Doves season 2 on November 5, 2026, with Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw returning as undercover spy Helen Webb and assassin Sam Young. The six-episode season continues the Netflix original series created by Joe Barton, whose first season debuted on December 5, 2024.
Netflix commissioned the second season before the first premiered. The renewal was announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2024, rather than following the first season’s streaming performance.
Rotten Tomatoes records 94% critic approval
As of November 7, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed season two at 94% on its Tomatometer, based on 18 critic reviews. The first season stood at 92% from 71 reviews. The second season’s figure was two percentage points higher, although its review count was substantially smaller.
The first season’s audience response was lower than its critic score: its Popcornmeter stood at 64% from more than 1,000 ratings. That audience measure is separate from the Tomatometer and reflects a different group of respondents.
Helen and Sam’s story continues
Black Doves follows Helen’s double life as a politician’s wife and a professional spy. In the first season, she secretly passes information about her husband to the organization that employs her. Her lover Jason, played by Andrew Koji, is murdered, prompting an investigation that brings her personal and covert lives into conflict.
Helen’s handler, Reed, calls in her old friend Sam to protect her. Their search for Jason’s killer connects London’s criminal underworld with a wider political conspiracy. The story is set against London at Christmas.
The Black Doves organization sells intelligence to the highest bidder. Helen’s work therefore serves that covert business, rather than a national intelligence agency.
Netflix’s synopsis for season two places Helen under greater pressure as her husband Wallace prepares to become prime minister. Reed faces a plot against her position within the Black Doves, while Helen reunites with Sam. Their investigation takes them further into the organization and back toward people and decisions from their pasts.
Returning cast and new additions
Sarah Lancashire returns as Reed, alongside Andrew Buchan as Wallace. Ella Lily Hyland also returns as Williams, with Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor and Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines.
Ambika Mod joins the second season as Laila, a Black Doves agent assigned to help Helen on a mission. Other additions include Babou Ceesay as organization executive Mr. Conteh, Sam Riley as Patrick and Neve Campbell as Cecile Mason.
Barton returns as writer, creator and executive producer. Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes directed the second season.
