Researchers have reported what may be the deepest and most extensive whale graveyard yet identified, spread across part of the south-eastern Indian Ocean and including fossils said to date back more than 5 million years.
The site is described as a large concentration of whale falls, the name given to dead whales that sink to the sea floor and become food and shelter for deep-sea life. In this case, the reported remains were found in the Diamantina fracture zone, a remote landscape of trenches and ridges between Australia and Antarctica.
The most striking part of the report is not only the age of some of the fossils, but the depth. The researchers say the remains were found at depths reaching more than 7km, in a part of the ocean where darkness, pressure and isolation make direct study difficult.
Why the Site Matters
Whale falls can become small, temporary ecosystems. A dead whale on the ocean floor may feed scavengers first, then support other animals that use the bones and surrounding sediment over a much longer period.
The Indian Ocean site appears to bring together modern whale falls and much older fossil material in one broad area. According to the researchers, that mix could help scientists study both living deep-sea communities and the history of whales that once moved through the region.
Dr Giovanni Bianucci of the University of Pisa, a co-author of the study, said the discovery points to how much remains unknown in extreme marine environments. He also linked the find to the study of beaked whales, a group that is difficult to observe because many species spend much of their lives far offshore and dive to great depths.
Some claims about the wider importance of the site remain best treated as cautious interpretations rather than settled conclusions. The study team has suggested that the graveyard may include species and ecosystems not yet known to science, but that will depend on further taxonomic work and confirmation.
What Researchers Say They Found
The team behind the study is described as including researchers based in China, Italy and New Zealand. They used a submersible to investigate the Diamantina fracture zone, which is understood to have formed tens of millions of years ago as Australia and Antarctica separated.
The researchers report that they carried out 32 dives to the sea floor. Across those dives, they recorded hundreds of whale-fossil sites, along with several modern natural whale falls in an advanced stage of decomposition. They also describe the sites as stretching along a northwest-southeast line for roughly 1,200km, a pattern they suggest could represent a whale-fall community corridor.
Among the reported finds was a five-metre skeleton identified as an Antarctic minke whale. The team also described fossil skull material from extinct beaked whales, including one assigned to Pterocetus benguelae and another that they named Pterocetus diamantinae.
Because these details come from the reported study findings, they should be read as the research team’s account of the site rather than as independently verified observations. Even so, the scale of the survey makes the area scientifically notable.
A Habitat Built From Remains
The modern carcasses were described as supporting a range of animals, including crustaceans, molluscs, bone-eating worms and brittle stars. The researchers also suggested that some of the species associated with the whale falls may be new to science.
That would fit with what scientists already know about whale falls as unusual deep-sea habitats. They can act like islands of food in a sparse environment, drawing in animals that specialize in using organic material that reaches the ocean floor.
Jon Copley, a professor of ocean exploration and science communication at the University of Southampton who was not involved in the work, called the reported discovery rare and unexpected. He noted that whale falls are difficult to find because, unlike some hydrothermal vents, they cannot easily be detected from a distance.
The mix of whales also raises questions. The reported remains include shallow-diving filter-feeding whales such as minke whales, as well as beaked whales, which are deep-diving hunters. One possible explanation raised by scientists is that the area lies along a migration route while also offering deep foraging habitat for species that hunt squid.
For now, the reported graveyard is less a finished story than a map of questions: why so many remains gathered there, how long the site has been accumulating them, and how many unfamiliar organisms may be living from what the whales left behind.
