OpenAI reportedly plans to buy Google’s AI chips, according to a person familiar with the matter. The proposed purchase has not been independently verified, and financial terms and other details were not disclosed.
OpenAI declined to comment on the plan. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment made outside regular business hours.
OpenAI’s existing chip supply
OpenAI had reportedly begun renting Google’s AI chips by June 2025. A purchase would deepen ties between OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google, which compete in AI products and search.
OpenAI is one of the largest buyers of Nvidia’s graphics processing units, or GPUs. The ChatGPT maker uses these processors to train AI models and run inference, the computing involved in producing outputs from trained models.
Google’s Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, have gained traction as an alternative to Nvidia’s AI chips as companies seek cheaper options and processors suited to running AI models.
