Sony’s rumoured PlayStation handheld could have an “exclusive of sorts” on AMD’s RDNA 5 graphics architecture, Richard Leadbetter reportedly suggested. The claim concerns a dedicated handheld system-on-chip and has not been independently verified.

The suggested advantage would come from access to semi-custom hardware. It does not establish a formal exclusivity agreement between Sony and AMD or confirm the handheld’s specifications.

Production commitments and a disputed Xbox claim

AMD is reportedly becoming more selective about developing semi-custom handheld chips, with large production commitments said to be a condition for allocating engineering resources. That explanation remains unverified, including whether it would leave Sony as the only manufacturer with a dedicated RDNA 5 handheld chip.

Kepler_L2 previously claimed that AMD wanted a commitment of at least 10 million chips to develop a dedicated system-on-chip for Microsoft’s proposed Xbox handheld. An accompanying, unverified claim suggested Microsoft considered that commitment too risky. Jez Corden subsequently disputed the account, leaving the alleged requirement and Microsoft’s response unverified.

The possibility of a Sony head start depends on those claims being accurate. They do not establish which chips competing handhelds from Asus, Lenovo, Valve or Microsoft would use, or when standard RDNA 5 processors might become available.

Hardware specifications remain rumours

Separate, unverified rumours have linked the proposed Sony handheld to the codename Canis and an RDNA 5 GPU with 16 compute units. The suggested CPU configuration combines Zen 6c and low-power Zen 6 cores.

The device is also rumoured to run games natively, which would distinguish its proposed role from the streaming-focused PlayStation Portal. The codename, graphics hardware, CPU configuration and native-play capability have not been independently verified.
