Ancient grape DNA is adding a sharper, stranger layer to the history of winemaking in Tuscany. Researchers studying 2,000-year-old grape seeds recovered from wells in Chianti found evidence that one long-lived grape variety may have persisted across centuries of political and cultural change, from Etruscan communities into the Roman period.
The twist is that this dominant ancient vine appears to have produced white grapes, not the red varieties now associated with Chianti and its sangiovese-based wines.
That does not rewrite modern Chianti in a neat before-and-after story. But it does complicate the region’s origin myth in a useful way: the genetic record suggests that ancient vineyards in the area may have been more stable, more curated, and more connected than a pile of discarded grape pips would otherwise imply.
What the grape seeds showed
The seeds came from Cetamura del Chianti, a hilltop archaeological site in Tuscany with layers of occupation spanning the Etruscan, Roman, and medieval periods. Between roughly 300BC and 300AD, people using the site dropped grape pips into deep wells, where oxygen-poor mud helped preserve them for later analysis.
A team led by scientists at the University of York sequenced DNA from 80 grape seeds. Dr Oya Inanli, a co-author of the study, said the analysis pointed to “a remarkable story of continuity,” with many of the tested seeds belonging to what appeared to be a single, identical variety maintained over generations.
The genetic markers also indicated that the dominant clone likely produced white berries. For a region now globally identified with red wine, that is the part of the finding that lands hardest.
Nancy De Grummond, a Florida State University professor whose team has excavated at Cetamura del Chianti for decades, described the result as an unexpected addition to the history of wine in Chianti: a famous red-wine region may have had a significant white-grape predecessor in antiquity.
Why it matters for wine history
The work is less about identifying a direct ancestor of a bottle on a shelf today and more about showing how ancient viticulture may have operated. If a single grape clone was maintained for centuries, that points to deliberate vineyard management rather than casual use of whatever vines were nearby.
After Roman control expanded over the settlement, the genetic record appears to show new grape varieties arriving at Cetamura. That pattern may reflect vines moving through wider Roman agricultural routes, although the evidence supports caution rather than a sweeping claim about the birth of modern wine production.
The dominant Cetamura clone was also found to be closely related to two ancient grape seeds previously tested from southern France. Taken together, the findings suggest that grape cultivation in the Roman world may have been linked across long distances, with plant material or closely related varieties moving between regions.
A more complicated origin story
Modern wine regions often sell continuity: the idea that today’s bottles are the latest expression of an unbroken local tradition. Ancient DNA tends to make that story messier. It can show persistence, but also replacement, movement, and experimentation.
For Chianti, the practical takeaway is not that its red wines are somehow less rooted in place. It is that the region’s viticultural past was probably broader than its present branding suggests. Long before Chianti became shorthand for red Tuscan wine, some of its vineyards may have been shaped around white grapes carefully maintained across generations.
That makes the finding valuable beyond archaeology. It gives wine history a more technical evidence base, one seed at a time, and shows how DNA analysis can recover agricultural decisions that written records often miss.
