Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is such a flawless unicorn of a superhero film that any sequel will have difficulty living up to it. With Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse  (Part 1), Sony is giving it a shot.

We got our first extended look at the planned sequel today, scheduled to hit theaters in October 2022. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the writers and producers of the sequel, told Entertainment Weekly on Saturday that it will be released in 2023.

Miles Morales is lying in his bed while Gwen Stacy calls out to him from another dimension in the trailer, which picks up just after the first film’s end.

What comes next appears to be… incredible? Of course, the original’s distinct art style is present. Still, it seems that the team is pushing the boundaries of that aesthetic with a really amazing-looking sequence at the end, which also reveals another character. It appears that Spider-Man 2099, a.k.a. Miguel O’Hara from Nueva York, a rebranded New York, is on the loose.

I’m really looking forward to this one.
