Supra customers won’t have to settle with automatic transmissions for much longer. Instead, the Supra will get a manual transmission option this year, according to Roadshow. On Wednesday, The Drive broke the story, citing a dealership source.

Toyota hasn’t said what other upgrades the Supra will get this year, but a clutch pedal is among them. Is this what the Supra requires to be successful? Maybe, but that’s something drivers will have to determine and vote on with purchase orders. The top-of-the-line Supra is now equipped with a BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter turbo-four is the entry model. It’s unclear whether the manual will be available for both engines, but all indications point to “yes.” While a manual won’t persuade anyone who thinks the Supra is merely a BMW Z4 with a facelift, it will satisfy those who want to row their own gears for added enjoyment.

A Toyota representative declined to comment on a potential future product.

However, a Supra with a manual transmission isn’t Toyota’s only exciting announcement. We’ll also see a Corolla GR, which will use the buzzing turbo-three engine from the Yaris GR to give North Americans a new hot hatch. In summary, 2022 appears to be shaping up to be another fantastic year for sports cars.
