Ukraine’s e-Points system is designed around a blunt wartime idea: units that produce confirmed battlefield results earn points they can spend on the equipment they need next.
The model links verified strikes, reconnaissance work, and other approved operations to a procurement marketplace for drones, ground robots, electronic warfare systems, and related gear. In practice, it gives front-line units a way to convert operational success into new tools without waiting entirely on a traditional supply chain.
It may also be changing what some units prioritize. Ukrainian officials, military analysts, and soldiers involved in the drone fight have described the system as a way to push units beyond the easiest targets in front of them and toward targets that better match wider battlefield goals. That includes more difficult Russian assets and infrastructure farther from the line of contact, though the full battlefield effect of the incentive system is difficult to independently measure.
The result is a wartime procurement experiment that looks less like a conventional military allocation process and more like a controlled internal market. Ukraine is not simply rewarding kills. It is trying to make battlefield demand, command priorities, and defense-tech supply move faster in the same direction.
How Ukraine’s e-Points system works
Under the e-Points model, Ukrainian units receive points after submitting video confirmation of eligible battlefield activity. Those points can then be spent through the Brave1 Marketplace, a government-backed defense-tech platform that offers equipment such as drones, unmanned ground systems, electronic warfare tools, and other military technologies.
The core appeal is speed and choice. Instead of receiving only what a central procurement channel assigns, units can use earned points to select equipment they know, trust, or already train with. For drone teams, that matters because small differences in airframes, controllers, payloads, software, and repairability can shape whether a system is useful in the field.
Dmytro “Liber” Zhluktenko, a former drone pilot and lessons-learned analyst with Ukraine’s 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment “RAID,” has described the system as a practical lifeline for units that need specific equipment rather than generic supply. In his framing, the value is not just that a unit can get a drone. It is that it can get the particular drone its operators know how to fly and maintain.
That kind of choice is central to Ukraine’s broader defense-tech approach. The country’s military has often operated with more decentralization than many Western militaries, with units working directly with manufacturers, testing equipment quickly, and feeding battlefield lessons back into product design. The e-Points system formalizes part of that loop by tying battlefield activity to purchasing power.
Why incentives matter on the battlefield
Military incentives are not new, but Ukraine’s approach is unusually explicit. If command wants more pressure on a certain category of Russian target, the reward structure can be adjusted. That gives units a direct reason to shift attention, assuming they have the intelligence, equipment, and operational opportunity to do so.
Early versions of the system emphasized high-value equipment such as tanks and launchers. Later expansions broadened the eligible activity to include areas such as reconnaissance missions, operations involving ground robotic systems, sniper actions, and mobile air-defense teams shooting down Shahed attack drones. Those expansions suggest the system is being used not only to count destruction but to encourage behaviors Ukraine wants more of across the front.
Analysts familiar with Russian warfare have argued that this kind of reward structure can nudge units away from only attacking what is immediately visible. Infantry and armored vehicles near the front remain important targets, but the system can also encourage attempts against more complex targets such as rear-area infrastructure, barracks, and logistics vehicles operating far behind Russian lines.
That does not mean every strike is suddenly strategic, or that a points system alone can reshape a war. Target access still depends on reconnaissance, drone range, electronic warfare conditions, weather, air defenses, and the ability to coordinate across units. But the incentive design gives Ukraine a mechanism for turning top-level priorities into behavior at the unit level faster than a normal procurement memo or command directive might.
A marketplace signal for weapons makers
The Brave1 Marketplace gives Ukraine another advantage: it produces demand signals. When units repeatedly spend points on certain drones, jammers, robots, or other systems, that data can show commanders and manufacturers what front-line troops actually want.
That matters in a war where hardware can become obsolete quickly. Drone designs that worked months earlier can struggle once Russia adapts its jamming, camouflage, or air-defense tactics. A marketplace can expose that shift faster than a slow procurement review because units stop choosing ineffective systems and gravitate toward gear that survives current battlefield conditions.
Scott Boston, a land warfare expert at RAND Corporation, has described this marketplace effect as a way for commanders to experiment, see what works, and send clearer signals to industry. The important point is not that every unit becomes a procurement office. It is that front-line experience feeds back into the system with less delay.
For Ukraine’s defense industry, that feedback loop has become a defining feature of the war. Soldiers test equipment under real conditions. Manufacturers adjust designs. Units choose what performs. Commanders see what gets selected. The e-Points system appears to put a more structured layer around that cycle.
The strategic push behind deeper strikes
Ukraine has also been using longer-range drones and improved planning tools to put pressure on Russian logistics and rear-area targets that were once safer from attack. The e-Points system sits inside that wider shift rather than replacing it.
The country’s Delta battlefield-management system combines information from sources such as satellites, combat units, and drone feeds, giving commanders a broader view of the battlefield. When that kind of intelligence picture is paired with incentives for certain target categories, units can be pushed toward missions that serve a larger operational plan instead of simply reacting to the closest threat.
That is the strategic promise of the e-Points model. It does not just reward a unit after a successful mission. It can help align what front-line teams want, what commanders need, and what industry is building.
The risk is that incentives can also distort behavior if they are poorly calibrated. A reward system has to value the right activity, verify results accurately, and avoid pushing units toward targets that are difficult but not worth the operational cost. Ukraine’s use of video confirmation is meant to keep the system grounded in evidence, but verification and target valuation are still hard problems in a fast-moving war.
Why the system matters beyond Ukraine
For Western militaries, Ukraine’s e-Points system is a reminder that procurement speed has become a battlefield capability. A force that can learn faster, buy faster, and adapt its incentives faster may be able to keep pressure on an opponent even when both sides are constantly changing tactics.
Traditional military procurement is built for accountability, scale, and long service lives. Those goals still matter. But drone warfare has exposed the limits of systems that take years to approve and field equipment. Small unmanned systems, electronic warfare tools, and software-heavy battlefield platforms can change in weeks or months, not decades.
Ukraine’s model is not a clean template that every military can copy. It depends on the urgency of wartime, a large ecosystem of domestic and allied suppliers, and a culture of rapid field experimentation. It also depends on accepting a level of decentralization that many militaries would find uncomfortable.
Still, the e-Points system shows how battlefield incentives and procurement can be tied together. Units get a reason to pursue priority targets. Command gets a way to steer behavior without micromanaging every mission. Manufacturers get a clearer picture of what front-line users value. In a drone-heavy war, that may be as important as any single platform.
The system’s full impact remains hard to separate from Ukraine’s broader improvements in drones, intelligence, and operational planning. But as a defense-tech experiment, it points to a larger shift: modern militaries are not only competing over weapons. They are competing over how quickly they can turn battlefield evidence into better decisions.
