German anti-war thriller Der Tiger is rolling out worldwide on Prime Video, with the film set to hit the platform on January 2, 2026, in all 240 territories where the service is available.
The feature, which carries the English title The Tank, follows a five-man crew operating a German Tiger tank on a secret mission during World War II.
First German Amazon Original to Go Theatrical Before Streaming
Der Tiger holds a milestone for the streamer: it’s the first German Amazon Original film to receive a local theatrical release in Germany before heading to Prime Video.
As previously reported, the movie secured a limited rollout in select CineStar cinemas across Germany, beginning September 18, 2025, giving audiences an early big-screen look at the tense war drama before its global streaming bow.
A Dark WWII Thriller on the Eastern Front
Directed by Dennis Gansel, the film is set on the Eastern Front in 1943 and tracks a Tiger tank crew sent deep behind enemy lines.
Starring David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky and Yoran Leicher, the story follows the soldiers as they edge further into hostile territory, confronting not only Soviet forces but also their own fears and growing paranoia.
Fuelled by Wehrmacht methamphetamine, what begins as a covert operation increasingly turns into a psychological descent — a journey into the heart of darkness in the frozen wastelands of the Eastern Front. Supporting roles are played by Tilman Strauß and André M. Hennicke.
Production Team and Creative Line-Up
Pantaleon Films produces the feature in association with Amazon MGM Studios Germany. The film is produced by Frank Kusche and Dan Maag, with the screenplay penned by Dennis Gansel and Colin Teevan.
Behind the camera, Carlo Jelavic serves as director of photography, shaping the claustrophobic interior of the tank and the stark battlefields outside. Nick Palmer is on production design, while Anke Winckler oversees costume design, bringing to life period-accurate uniforms and gear. Hair and make-up design come from Meg Tanner, rounding out the film’s meticulous period look.
Prime Video’s Expanding German Originals Slate
Der Tiger joins a growing slate of German-language originals on Prime Video as the platform continues to invest in local productions with global potential.
Recent and upcoming German titles on the service include hit comedy format LOL: Last One Laughing, YA phenomenon Maxton Hall – The World Between Us, reality competition The Perfect Miss, crime series The Calendar Killer, culinary travel show Dinner Club: Germany, and social experiment reality series The 50.
With its theatrical-first release and international rollout under the title The Tank, Der Tiger is positioned as one of Prime Video Germany’s most ambitious original films to date — a tightly wound, character-driven war thriller aiming to appeal to both arthouse and genre audiences worldwide.
