ASRock’s BC-250 mining board has become an odd but tempting project platform for DIY gaming builds. Since late 2025, used boards have been showing up for well under $150, giving hobbyists a way to build a Linux-based living-room PC around a PS5-derived SoC and 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

Now the board has another reason to draw attention: a third-party register patch can reportedly enable up to 40 compute units, compared with the 24 CUs available on the BC-250 in stock form. That gives the mining blade more active CUs than a base PlayStation 5, at least on paper, and early game testing shows meaningful gains.

What the 40 CU Mod Changes

The BC-250 was not sold as a normal consumer graphics card or console board. It is a mining product built around B-grade PS5-family silicon, which is why only 24 CUs are active out of the box. The new community patch changes that by writing to hardware registers during GPU driver initialization through a kernel module parameter.

That does not mean every board has 40 healthy CUs waiting to be used. The disabled units may have been turned off because they were defective, unstable, or unsuitable for the original product target.
